Review of Bob Dozier Companion

Bob Dozier is a knife-making legend known for fantastic hollow grinds, precise D2 heat treats, the best sheaths in the world, and top notch ergonomics. His Companion model is a fairly interesting-looking knife that really shows off Bob’s design genius.

The Companion has a very basic spear-point blade shape. This particular knife has a full flat grind instead of a hollow grind. I ordered the knife this way because I like flat ground spear-points, but you can get the same knife in a hollow or convex ground version. The basic spear-point shape is not fancy, but it is very practical and is very good for draw cuts, piercing, and general utility.

The handle shape has the obvious “step” in it. While this looks fairly strange it is great for comfort and security. That step helps keep the ring and pinky fingers secure and comfortable while in the standard forward grip. If you look at your hand you will see that the ring and pinky fingers start closer to the wrist than the index and middle fingers do. This step follows that ergonomic principle to insure comfort, but also helps prevent your hand from slipping forward. The step is also comfortable in the reverse grip, but not as much so.

The integrated guard that Bob Dozier uses not only acts as a very functional finger guard, but also as a great mechanism for the Kydex sheath. It helps keep the knife in the sheath securely with a positive lock, but allows it to easily be removed and returned. The Dozier integrated guard does not get in the way of your fingers or thumb while in the pikal grip. In fact, it provides a nice thumb ramp. Traditional guards are much more clunky.

This particular Companion is in white paper Micarta, but you can select from a huge variety of handle materials including various colors of paper, linen, and canvas Micarta, carbon fiber, G-10, stag, horn, and hardwoods.

The Companion is small enough that it rides very comfortably on your belt in the horizontal sheath.
