Opinel

If you have never heard of an Opinel knife, go buy one. How can I suggest to someone that they buy a knife they have never heard of? Because it is extremely cheap and capable. If you do not like it, no big deal. But if you do, then you just got a great knife for a little money. Opinels are such classics that everyone should try one.

Opinels are very simple knives made in France… by Opinel of course. But “Opinel” style knives are made elseware and by other companies. The knives are either friction folders, or have a colar lock. The colar can be twisted to lock the knife open, and sometimes closed as well (depending on the model). Most Opinels are carbon steel, but some are available in stainless.

Opinels are very simple and lightweight, which makes them appealing to anyone that likes minimalistic tools. However, Opinels are also fairly tough beaters, and great cutters. The thin blade is not good for prying, but it cuts very well.

Opinel knives are not tough like a Strider. Not even close. This should be obvious. But they are very able to take a beating and are often used by professional wilderness instructors and expert survivalists. Many people also customize their Opinels by carving the wood handle into something more eye-catching.
