Mora Hunting Knives

A Mora is a traditional Swedish hunting knife. Moras are characterized by a lack of guard, a straight spine (as opposed to a drop or clip point), and a Scandinavian grind. A Scandinavian grind is similar to a flat grind, or a saber grind, only there is no final bevel. Instead of the flat saber grind having a secondary or final edge grind, it continues on (at the same angle) and becomes the edge.

There are some advantages to the Scandinavian grind. First of all it is cheaper and easier to make. Secondly it is easier to sharpen because you have a much larger edge grind. This allows you to keep a consistant angle easier. Scandinavian grinds also slice well. A normal flat grind knife has a final bevel that is more obtuse than the primary grind. This is done to make the edge stronger. Scandinavian grinds lack this bevel and are therefore usually a more acute angle, though less robust. However, a flat ground knife with the same edge angle as a Mora would have a thinner spine (since the primary grind would be even more acute), so Scandinavian grinds do tend to be less efficient.

Moras are very inexpensive and capable knives. Without a guard they are not great for heavy use, and the blades are not great for such use either. But as a light hunting knife or a light duty utility knife, they are a huge amount of bang for the buck. They are great “around the home” or garden knives as well.
