Bob Dozier Straight Personal Review
The Bob Dozier Straight Personal has a straight spine to the tip, as opposed to a drop or clip point. This gives you more cutting edge and more belly along with a very pointy tip. The “personal” part of the knife’s name comes from the size. With a ~3inch long blade and ~3inch long handle the knife is very compact and easy to carry. Using the Bob Dozier horizontal Kydex sheath and is supplied with the knife, you can hardly even notice that the knife is there. It stays out of the way until you need it, and then is quickly accessible when you do. It is a great every-day-carry personal fixed blade that is superior to any folder in just about every way.
My Bob Dozier Straight Personal has yellow paper Micarta scales. They start off a brighter yellow color but quickly darken and age. I feel this is a good thing because they know have a very deep, rich, antiqued look to them that goes great with the bronze bolts. I also like the clean look of the blade because the Bob Dozier Arkansas stamp is on one of the bolts rather than on the ricasso or primary grind.
Each Bob Dozier Kydex sheath is custom made for each knife he makes. They are not mass produced, but rather hand fitted to each custom knife. This ensures a perfect fit. The lock is very positive. When returning the knife to the sheath it is either locked in, or not. There is no vagueness. Likewise, when removing the knife from the sheath, a quick pull is all that is needed. The knife does not rattle around in the sheath, and there range of motion in which the knife is stuck in the sheath is very small. It is either locked in securely, or it is out. There is no in-between area where the knife can be in the sheath but only partially stuck in. This is all important because the sheath is very important when carrying a fixed blade. A low-quality sheath can make a fixed blade uncomfortable or unsafe to carry. Much of the reason that Bob Dozier’s small fixed blade models are so great for every-day-carry is that the sheath makes them as comfortable as any folder, safer than any folder, and faster than any folder.
The Straight Personal is an excellent personal utility knife, or EDC knife, and can also serve as a small game hunting knife, a caping knife, a paring knife in the kitchen, or a wood-working knife. It is very comfortable in every grip including the caping or whittling grip.
